BLOOMVILLE — When deciding on what he wanted to do for his final project, local Eagle Scout candidate Patrick Heckler wanted to make a difference for people like him. That’s why he chose to assist with the installation of two EnChroma scenic viewers, allowing people with color blindness to see a broader range of colors.
One of which is installed at Garlo Heritage Nature Preserve, located at 6777 Ohio 19, Bloomville, and the other at Steyer Nature Preserve, located at 5901 N. CR 33, Tiffin.
"I myself am color blind, that's what really inspired the project," shared Heckler. He continued, noting the disability is what he calls surprisingly common, affecting 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women.
According to Heckler, people with typical vision can also experience enhanced colors through the lenses.
Through his efforts, he was able to raise roughly $8,500 for the purchase of the devices– and according to staff at Seneca Parks, these are two of only three such viewers across Ohio, with the other located in Delaware County.
“Colorblindness impacts so many people, and we have already seen and heard heartwarming stories from visitors who have tried them out,” shared Sarah Betts, executive director of Seneca Parks.
A thank-you and dedication reception celebrating Heckler’s project is planned for 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Garlo Heritage Preserve in Bloomville.
Visitors can hear more about the project’s impact and try the viewers firsthand while enjoying the fall scenery. Light refreshments will be provided.
